The Mutag Biochip microbial substrate is a type of mobile biofilm carrier designed to enhance the efficiency of wastewater treatment in biological reactors. This material is typically made from PE or HDPE (high-density polyethylene). The surface of the biochip is designed with numerous pores, which provide an environment for microorganisms to adhere and thrive. The biochip microbial substrate is used in biological reactors to improve the treatment efficiency of the reactor specifically and the entire system in general. Biological reactors equipped with Mutag Biochip are known for their high wastewater treatment performance. Additionally, when the influent wastewater flow increases, there is no need to expand the infrastructure, as the treatment efficiency can reach up to 95%.

Currently, various types of biochip microbial substrates are available on the market, primarily originating from Germany. You can select the appropriate material based on treatment requirements and technical standards to suit your specific application needs.

Mutag BioChip: High-Performance Biofilm Carrier for MBBR/IFAS Applications

The Mutag BioChip is a high-performance biofilm carrier developed in 2008, based on extensive experience with large-scale applications of various biofilm carriers. It is manufactured at Mutag’s own production facility. The superior material quality, advanced surface structure, and intricate pore system are just a few of the many benefits offered by this medium.

Microbial Habitat

The Mutag BioChip™ serves as a carrier for microorganisms (biofilm). Bacteria establish themselves within the porous system and metabolize degradable substances in wastewater. For centuries, it has been known that bacteria convert substances, and this natural process is utilized in biological wastewater treatment.

Protective Ring and Buffer Zone

The BioChip features a uniform outer ring that acts as a buffer, protecting the pore structure from potential damage, abrasion, or cuts. Due to its low net weight, the kinetic energy is also low, preventing mechanical abrasion.

Pore System and Diffusion Depth

The evenly distributed surface and pore structure, with a diameter of up to 30 mm, provide an optimal habitat for microorganisms due to its open pores. The pores of the Mutag BioChip are permanently filled with active biomass, as substrates and/or oxygen can diffuse into the biofilm to a depth of approximately 0.5 mm on both sides of the chip. This is facilitated by the chip’s thickness of approximately 1.1 mm. Thicker biofilms on the outer surface are abraded by shear forces, meaning the Mutag BioChip™ is self-cleaning.

High Protected Active Surface Area and Biological Removal Efficiency

The Mutag BioChip™ boasts an exceptionally high protected active surface area of over 5,500 m²/m³, fully available for biomass attachment, enabling highly efficient wastewater and biological water treatment. The key criterion for the biological removal capacity in MBBR systems is the maximum amount of active biomass that can be established on the carrier. Thus, the high surface area of the Mutag BioChip™ supports a large biomass volume.

Benefits of Using Mutag BioChip™

By utilizing the Mutag BioChip™, you can benefit from the following savings and advantages:

  • Optimal removal efficiency
  • Simple operation
  • Small system footprint and low mixing requirements, resulting in low energy costs
  • Easy upgrading or retrofitting of existing plants, with low installation costs
